Hiking Trails Following the Footsteps of the Ancient World

Letoon, Xanthos, and Sdyma are among the most important cities of ancient Lycia. With the establishment of the Lycian Union in the 5th century BC, Xanthos became the political and cultural center of the region. Letoon, on the other hand, emerged as a religious center, with sacred areas built for the worship of Lycia’s gods. From the 4th century BC, the region further developed under the influence of the Hellenistic period, and became an important settlement during the Roman Empire. In the Roman period, the structures in the region offer remarkable examples of engineering and architecture. Although Sdyma was a smaller settlement, it continued to exist under Roman rule. Today, the ruins of these ancient cities provide an important archaeological site for those who wish to explore the history and culture of Lycia.
