Why You Should Hike the Lycian Way

March 25, 2026

The Lycian Way offers a unique combination of coastal scenery, ancient history, and flexible hiking styles. It allows hikers to choose between remote wilderness camping and comfortable village stays while exploring one of the most diverse long-distance trails in the Mediterranean region.

A Unique Combination of Nature, History and Landscape

Some long-distance hikes impress you with scenery. Others with history. A few with wildlife.

The Lycian Way somehow manages to combine all of it.

Along this trail, you walk through landscapes that feel almost unreal — rugged cliffs above a deep blue sea, quiet pine forests, remote mountain villages, and endless coastal views. At the same time, you are literally hiking through thousands of years of human history. Ruins appear in places where you least expect them, reminding you that these paths existed long before they became a modern hiking trail.

And then there is the nature. Depending on the season, the trail is full of wildflowers, insects, birds, reptiles, and tortoises slowly crossing the path in front of you. Sometimes you might even spot a beautiful snake warming itself in the sun. Just keep your distance and respect them — some species are venomous. But usually they will disappear long before you get close.

A Trail That Adapts to Your Hiking Style

One of the things that makes the Lycian Way so special is the flexibility.

If you want a true outdoor adventure, you can carry your tent, cook on a small camping stove, and sleep in remote campsites with nothing but the sound of the sea and the wind in the trees.

But if you prefer a more comfortable experience, that works just as well. There are guesthouses, small pensions, and restaurants along many sections of the trail. On one occasion, I even ended a hiking day relaxing in a jacuzzi just a few meters away from the route.

Every day you can decide how adventurous or how convenient your journey should be.

People and Unexpected Companions on the Trail

Long-distance trails have a way of bringing like-minded people together. On the Lycian Way, it’s very common to meet other hikers who join you for a few hours, a couple of days, or at least an evening around a small campfire sharing stories from the trail.

But hikers are not the only companions you will meet.

Many times, a friendly dog will suddenly appear and decide to walk with you for a while. Sometimes just for an hour, sometimes for an entire day. Others might simply demand a few pets before continuing their own business. And yes — occasionally one might also bark at you. That’s part of the experience.

The locals you meet along the trail are another highlight. Shepherds working in the mountains often greet hikers with genuine curiosity and kindness. Being invited for a hot glass of çay is not unusual, and sometimes the hospitality even includes freshly cooked food.

Memorable Sections of the Lycian Way

Adrasan to Gelidonya Lighthouse

One of them is the hike from Adrasan to the Gelidonya Lighthouse. Especially in spring, when the hills are covered in wildflowers, the views across the islands along the coast are simply breathtaking.

Göynük Canyon

Another unforgettable section leads through Göynük Canyon. What starts as a hike quickly turns into a real adventure — climbing over large boulders, wading through the river, and navigating a spectacular canyon landscape.

The Eternal Flames Near Çıralı

And then there is a place near Çıralı where flames emerge directly from cracks in the mountain. Natural gas escaping from the rock creates small eternal fires that have been burning for centuries. It’s one of those strange natural phenomena you don’t expect to see on a hiking trail.

Ancient Cities Along the Route

The Lycian Way also connects many incredible archaeological sites. Walking through Patara, Olympos, Letoon, or Demre, you move through layers of history that date back thousands of years.

Not Every Day Will Be Easy

Of course, no long-distance hike is perfect every single day.

There will be steep ascents where you question why you started this journey in the first place. That happens on almost every multi-day hike sooner or later, to me at least.

Sometimes the water source you were counting on isn’t as reliable as expected. Good thing you packed a filter and some extra water.

Other times the campsite you had in mind turns out to be less ideal than it looked on the map.

These small challenges are simply part of the experience. With proper planning — and a healthy sense of adventure — they become stories rather than problems.

A Trail Worth the Effort

For me, the Lycian Way represents everything that makes long-distance hiking so special: spectacular landscapes, deep history, incredible nature, welcoming people, and just enough unpredictability to keep every day interesting.

After hiking more than ten different long-distance trails across Europe and Western Asia, it remains my favorite.

And if you’re thinking about hiking it yourself, I created a Survival Guide video on my YouTube channel where I share the lessons I learned along the way. In that video you can also follow my entire journey along the trail and see many of the adventures and challenges that come with it.
