Olympic Torch and Olympos
After the challenging trail of the previous day, you spend a relaxing day in Çıralı.
During this break, you can take a short hike to Yanartaş (Chimaera) and watch the eternal flames rising from the rocks — a natural phenomenon caused by gases escaping from the earth.
The view is especially captivating at sunset or after dark.
If you’re interested in history, you can also visit the ancient city of Olympos.
Did you know that the word Olympics originates from Olympos?
According to Homer, the region’s story begins here…
![]() |
Bellerophontes, riding his winged horse Pegasus, goes to fight Chimera. When Chimera attacks, Pegasus takes flight, and as Bellerophontes lands, he drives his spear into the beast and buries it seven layers beneath the earth. However, Chimera continues to burn, spewing flames from the depths of the earth. According to Homer, these still-burning flames are the fires of Chimera erupting from seven layers below. |
![]() |
To celebrate Bellerophontes' victory, a race is held in Olympos. The athletes light their torches with the Sacred Fire of Chimera and run toward the city of Olympos. Thus, the first example of the Olympic Games in Anatolia takes place. The "Olympic Torch" lit today is a symbolic representation of Chimera’s eternal fire. |
